Everything you need to know about eye strain

Certain eye conditions have similar symptoms but the causes of the condition and required treatment are different. When you experience the symptoms of dry eyes, you are likely to use an electric dry eye mask. However, if you don't get relief after using an electric heated dry eye mask, you may be suffering from some other eye condition that has symptoms similar to the symptoms of dry eye. 

Eye strain occurs due to extended computer use. Eye strain represents a group of symptoms. This condition causes eye discomfort. However, eye strain does not cause some serious damage to your eyes. You do not experience any permanent consequences when your eyes are exposed to excessive or inadequate lighting or extended use of a computer. 

The following are the symptoms of eye strain:

  • Feeling of dryness

  • Blurred vision

  • Headaches

Eye strain does not cause any changes to the anatomy of eyes. Keep in mind that it is not a disease. It is a symptom. Eye strain occurs when your eyes are tired due to intense use. For example, you have been reading, driving or working at your computer for extended periods. Eye strain disappears itself once your eyes get adequate rest. However, eye strain symptoms may also indicate an underlying condition. It may not be possible to address all the factors that cause this condition. However, you can reduce eye strain. 

Eye strain is also known as asthenopia. When you are doing a visual task for longer periods, it can cause tired eyes, ocular fatigue, headaches, blurring and even doubling of the vision. 

Eye strain prevention

You can take the following steps to prevent or reduce eye strain:

  • Keep the room softly lit while using a computer or watching TV.

  • Position the source of light according to your comfort when you are doing close work or reading a book or any other printed material.

  • Take occasional breaks when you are doing close work.

  • Try to limit your screen time.

  • You can also use over-the-counter artificial tears.

  • Improve indoor air quality.

  • Choose the right eyewear.

  • Use an adjustable lamp when you are reading or writing.

You are likely to suffer from eye strain if you use a computer. Take the following steps to prevent eye strain:

  • Refresh your eyes by blinking more often.

  • Give your eyes a break and follow the 20-20-20 rule.

  • Reduce glare by placing an anti-glare cover over your computer screen.

  • Adjust monitor correctly.

  • Adjust screen settings.

  • Place your documents in a document holder when you need to read these documents while using the computer.

If you experience persistent eye strain that causes irritation, it may be a symptom of some other conditions such as the dry eye. Your doctor may recommend an electric dry eye mask if you are diagnosed with dry eyes.
